A thought I’ve had about Joseph Smith’s “revelations” and “prophetic power” is how it actually goes against the commandment against taking the Lord’s name in vain. We tend to think about the commandment in terms of avoiding using God’s name in our daily language (OMG, etc.) because culturally that’s how we treat it, and we default to replacing “God” in these contexts as if it is better.
Clearly, this is an issue and application outside of Mormonism, clearly. However, to take God’s name in vain would mean using God’s name for your own vanity and selfishness. To use God’s name to build your image and reputation. To say that God supports OUR personal agenda, whatever it might be.
THAT is what Joseph Smith is doing.
