The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons) has been in the news lately in connection with the assassination of Charlie Kirk and the murderous attack on an LDS chapel in Michigan. As Americans have rushed to find the “cause” of these attacks, several groups have been blamed including: Latter-day Saints, Political Conservatives/Republicans, Political Liberals/Democrats, Evangelical Christians, and Ex-Mormon influencers. Today we will discuss many of these theories with an amazing panel: Julie de Azevedo Hanks, Bishop Beau Oyler, Jana Spangler, and John Dehlin.

  1. John, from my perspective neither you nor Mormon Stories bear any responsibility for the killings and actions against Mormons and the Mormon Church. There is a lot of ex-Mormons expressing concern and empathy for the members, and that is understandable. I for one used to value the members even as I found significant problems with the Church’s truth claims. But in recent years Membership support for a political party and its leader in the face of significant evidence of moral dereliction and a very real attack on democratic values has caused me to become a critic of the people as well as the Church itself.
