David Archuleta’s Mom Tells Her Mormon Story – Lupe Bartholomew | Ep. 1810

Download MP3

Lupe (Mayorga) Bartholomew is American Idol finalist David Archuleta’s mother. Lupe, her mother, and her two sisters joined the LDS church in Honduras on September 22, 1978. Ultimately, Lupe and her family came to the United States to live the Mormon dream. Lupe lived as a very happy, fully believing, orthodox Mormon mother until 2022, when her son, David, came out as gay. David’s difficulties with the LDS Church’s LGTBQ policies and doctrines caused Lupe to begin questioning the Mormon faith that she loved.

This is Lupe’s Mormon story.

  1. This is like Lupe is reading my life story! I left the church last year after 51 years, and I am so so grateful! I’ve grieved the loss of my LDS community at a difficult time in my life as my husband passed away last year. My children all left before me, and I’m the only one who was LDS in my extended family, so I’m grateful that I’m not tearing my family apart.
My sweet son David was in a gay lifestyle for 25+ years before he passed away at age 41, 21 years ago. I know that God loves him even more than I do. Our entire family always loved and supported him, welcoming him, and often his companions, into our homes.
My relationship with Jesus Christ began when I was a young girl. He has been my Savior all along, in spite of believing some false doctrine regarding Him. He remains my truest friend! I love Him and I know He loves me.
